Reality Redesigned Contest Official Rules

IMPORTANT:  Before your audition may be judged, all team members under the age of 18 must have their parent or legal guardian submit both a consent form and registration form as described below.

1. ELIGIBILITY: The Reality Redesigned Contest (Contest) is open to all legal U.S. and CDN residents who are students enrolled in 5th through 12th grade at a public, private, parochial, or home school located in Randolph County, NY in the Unites States of America. In order to be considered eligible, students must be currently enrolled in 5th through 12th grade at the time of entry and comply with these Official Rules. Employees, officers and directors of Edge Factor, Inc. and its parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, advertising agencies, promotional suppliers, and their immediate family members (spouse, siblings, and children, regardless of where they live) and members of the same households (whether related or not) (collectively, “Contest Entities”) are not eligible. Edge Factor’s determinations of eligibility are final and may be made at any time. Void where prohibited.

  1. (Round One): Auditions for round one of the contest open at 8:00 AM Eastern Time (“ET”) on February 1, 2017 and expire at 8:00 AM ET on March 8, 2017 (the "Contest Period"). On March 8, the Day of Reckoning, all auditions will be locked down and judging will begin. All complete auditions will become visible to the public who can vote on their favorite projects.
  2. (Round Two): The three highest scoring teams from round one will be deemed finalists and will face-off in the 84 hour challenge, held at our host college, where they will take on a real-life challenge. The 84 hour challenge begins on April 24, 2017 and it ends on April 27, 2017. The judges will announce the winner of round two, and crown the Reality Redesigned champions on April 28, 2017.

3. BRIEF CONTEST DESCRIPTION: Eligible students will have the opportunity to showcase their creativity and audition their team to become characters on the Reality Redesigned TV Show. Students will be given a randomly generated problem (see section five for more details) and will be tasked to gather a team and design a solution. For a student to officially enter the Contest, the student must be registered as described below and his/her entry completed, submitted and received between 8:00 AM ET on February 1, 2017 and 8:00 AM ET on March 8, 2017.

4. TO REGISTER AND ENTER: Starting at 8:00 AM ET on February 1, 2017, students can create an account and either begin or join an audition. When a student under the age of eighteen (18) registers for an account they will be asked to provide the email address of their parent/guardian. The parent/guardian will receive an email with on-screen directions to complete the online Parental Consent Form (“Consent Form”) and submit it so that it is received, in accordance with the directions found in the form. The parent/guardian will be asked to confirm their child’s name and email address during the completion of the Consent Form. All students under the age of eighteen (18) must receive parental/guardian consent otherwise, the auditions they are a part of will not be judged.

5. THE CHALLENGE: Once students have started an audition they will be assigned a set of three randomly generated cards. The first card will reveal a person, the second card will reveal an objective, and the third card will reveal a problem. Based on these cards the student/team will be given a challenge. Students can “flip” the cards as many times as they want. Once the students find a challenge that inspires them, they can lock the cards down and begin their audition. The solution they identify must directly address the needs of the person revealed in card one. The idea must be a new innovation or solution, and cannot simply be a behavioral change or new use for an existing product. Students will be asked to describe, design, and guesstimate the cost of their solution.

Teams can have a maximum size of six students (collaborators) and one mentor. Mentors must be at least 18 years of age and are not considered team members. Students may submit multiple entries and be a part of multiple teams.

What the judges will be looking for:

Auditions may not defame or invade the privacy rights of any person, living, deceased, or otherwise infringe upon a person’s personal or proprietary rights. The student(s) must have the exclusive rights over all aspects of his/her audition, including any ideas, language, content, images, text, graphics, and/or other materials used in the audition. By entering this contest, students warrant that the audition is an unpublished, original work that has not won any previous awards or recognitions. Edge Factor’s determination as to whether an audition violates the rights of any third party is final. Submissions that are deemed by the Judges in their sole discretion to be immoral, obscene, profane or not in keeping with Edge Factor's image will be disqualified. Edge Factor reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any entry at any time which, in the Edge Factor’s reasonable opinion, endangers the safety or well-being of any person or in the event it is determined that the student has not complied with these Official Rules. In addition to Edge Factor’s right to do so at its discretion, the judges will also be instructed to disqualify any entry that violates or is inconsistent with these Official Rules.

Participation in the Contest constitutes the student’s and his/her parent’s or guardian’s full and unconditional agreement to and acceptance of these Official Rules and the decisions of Edge Factor and Judges. By entering the Contest, the student and his/her parent or guardian warrants that the audition is an original creation; has not been previously published or won any award; and that student and the parent or guardian is aware of no conflicting rights in the submission or claims to the submission, including but not limited to copyright or other intellectual property right.

Round 1: All auditions will first be screened to ensure they meet the minimum requirements. A panel of qualified judges from Edge Factor and its partner organizations, educators and science professionals will then score qualifying auditions. Auditions will be scored on the following judging criteria:

1. Creativity (ingenuity and innovative thinking) (25%);

2. Scientific knowledge (15%);

3. Persuasiveness and effective communication (20%)
4. Level of effort put into the audition (15%); and

5. Overall presentation (15%).

The public’s vote, plus any bonus points your team earns, will influence the final ten percent (10%) of your score.

The judges will rank all eligible auditions recieved. The members of the three highest scoring teams will be deemed finalists and will have the opportunity to compete in the 84 hour challenge, held at our host college, all pending verification of eligibility and continued compliance with these Official Rules. The members of the three finalist teams will be notified by phone and/or email on about March 31, 2017. In the event of any ties, the “overall presentation” score will be used as a first tiebreaker. In the event any tie remains after applying this first tiebreaker, the “Creativity” score will be used as a secondary tiebreaker.

In the event that a student competitor is a team member on more than one team advancing to round 2, that student must decide which team he/she will remain on as a contestant.  The vacancy space on the team the player has abandoned may be left empty or filled by a new student IF and ONLY IF the team members unanimously agree AND Edge Factor approves the addition.

Round 2: The three finalist teams will participate in the 84 hour challenge from April 24, 2017 to April 27, 2017. The challenge will be located at Randolph Community College in Asheboro, North Carolina. The teams will be given a real-world challenge, a toolbox of resources and ONLY 84 hours to dream, design, build and get ready to present their ideas. 3D Printing, Machining, and Welding will merge as the ideas flow from the teams as they seek to redesign reality. As the clock runs out, the contestant's projects will be packed up, and brought into the studio. They'll pitch their designs to a panel of qualified Judges, selected by Edge Factor, in front of audience members from the community. The designs will be evaluated according to judging and scoring criteria to be provided to the finalists when they begin the 84 hour challenge. The judging criteria will also designate a tie breaking criterion, to be used in the event of any ties. The team of finalists who score the highest, according to these criteria, will be deemed the Grand Prize winner. Once the Grand Prize Winner has been determined, the second and third place winners will be announced. Edge Factor reserves the right to award additional prizes or titles to the three finalists, in its sole discretion.

No more than two teams from the same school can make it to the round two, the 84 Hour Challenge. To ensure fairness and to promote competition, the teams in Round Two may not share a mentor. Each team must have it's own mentor.

The decisions of Edge Factor and Judges are final and binding in all matters.

Please Note: The scholarship awarded is given BY Randolph Community College for use exclusively at Randolph Community College and is non-transferable, non-exchangeable.
